Extreme Pucón: Adventure Guide!

Pucón is not just a beautiful lake and cozy cafés. Pucón is the adventure paradise of Chile. Adrenaline is in the air here.
Climb an active volcano? Yes. Go down a river on a raft? Also. Fly through the trees? Of course.
In this guide I'll tell you everything you need to know to experience Pucón in its most extreme version. And hey: you don't need to be an athlete, just willing.
1. Climbing Villarrica Volcano – The Queen Adventure

If there's one activity that defines Pucón, it's this one. Climbing Villarrica Volcano means walking on snow, seeing the smoking crater from the summit, and then sliding down the slope like a giant toboggan.
🎢 Adrenaline level: 5/5
💰 Reference price for students:
From $150,000 CLP to $170,000 CLP (includes equipment: crampons, helmet, poles, mountain boots, backpack, certified guide and transfer).
⏱️ Duration:
A full day. Departure from Pucón around 6:00 AM, return around 5:00 PM. The hike itself takes 5-6 hours up and 2-3 hours down (sliding).
📅 Best season:
October to March (stable snow season). In winter the weather is more extreme and the ascent is sometimes closed.
🏢 Recommended agencies:
Ruténica
PuconTours
🎒 What to bring:
Thermal clothing (base layer)
Fleece or wool jacket
Waterproof jacket
Snow pants or waterproof pants
Sunglasses (snow reflects strongly)
Sunscreen
Water and snacks
Small backpack
💡 Tip for students:
Compare prices between agencies, but don't choose just because it's cheap. Ask if the guide is certified and if the equipment is in good condition.
2. Rafting on the Trancura River – White Water for Everyone
The Trancura River is the perfect setting for rafting. It has two sections: the lower (class 2-3, for beginners) and the upper (class 3-4, for those who want more excitement). Both are incredible.
🎢 Adrenaline level:
Lower section: 3/5
Upper section: 4/5
💰 Reference price for students:
From $35,000 CLP per person (includes equipment: life jacket, helmet, paddle, wetsuit, guide and transfer).
⏱️ Duration:
Approximately 3-4 hours total (transfer + briefing + 1.5-2 hours on the river).
📅 Best season:
October to April. In spring the water flow is higher due to snowmelt, more adrenaline.
🏢 Recommended agencies:
PuconTours
Kayakpucon
Baum Adventure
🎒 What to bring:
Swimsuit (to wear under the wetsuit)
Towel
Dry clothes to change into afterwards
Shoes that can get wet (not flip-flops)
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Water bottle
💡 Tip for students:
The lower section is perfect for your first time. The upper section is for the brave. If you've never done rafting, start with the lower. And go in a group: the more people, the more fun.
3. Hydrospeed – Go Down the River Like a Fish
If rafting feels too "touristy", hydrospeed is for you. It's basically a float board with handles. You lie face down in the river and go down with fins, helmet and life jacket. The water hits your face. Pure adrenaline.
🎢 Adrenaline level: 5/5
💰 Reference price for students:
From $50,000 CLP (includes full equipment and guide).
⏱️ Duration:
2-3 hours total.
📅 Best season:
Spring and summer (December to March), when the water isn't so cold.
🏢 Recommended agencies:
Hidroteam Pucón
Baum Adventure
Turismo Aventur
🎒 What to bring:
Swimsuit
Towel
Dry clothes
Guts (just kidding, but yes, you need to dare)
💡 Tip for students:
You don't need to be a perfect swimmer, but you do need good physical condition and no fear of the water. The guide is with you the whole time. It's more extreme than rafting, but also more fun.
4. Canopy – Fly Over the Forest

For those who want adrenaline without getting wet or too tired. Canopy consists of sliding along cables suspended between giant trees, sometimes over rivers or ravines.
🎢 Adrenaline level: 3/5
💰 Reference price for students:
From $35,000 CLP per person (includes equipment, guide and transport).
⏱️ Duration:
1.5 to 2 hours.
📅 Best season:
All year round (even in rain it's done, but you'll wear a poncho).
🏢 Recommended agencies:
Canopy Pucón
Bosque Aventura
Politur
🎒 What to bring:
Closed shoes
Comfortable clothes
Light jacket if it's cold
Sunscreen
💡 Tip for students:
It's the ideal activity to do in a group if some are afraid of more extreme adventures. Everyone can do it, from the bravest to the most nervous.

Pucon Paragliding
Parapente Pucón
🎒 What to bring:
Closed shoes
Comfortable clothes
Warm jacket (it's colder up there)
Sunscreen

This activity has a higher cost, but the experience of flying over the Andes Mountains and Villarrica Volcano is truly unique. It's worth considering the budget for a special occasion like a birthday or the end of your exchange.
6. Kayak on the Lake – Calm with a View of the Volcano

To lower your adrenaline after so much extreme action. Kayaking on Lake Villarrica is a calm activity, but with one of the best views you can imagine: the snow-capped volcano reflected in the water.
🎢 Adrenaline level: 1/5
💰 Reference price for students:
From $30,000 CLP (kayak rental)
⏱️ Duration:
1 to 3 hours, you decide.
📅 Best season:
Spring and summer (November to March). In winter it's too cold.
🏢 Recommended agencies:
Kayak Pucón
Pucón Expediciones
Aguaventura
🎒 What to bring:
Swimsuit
Sunscreen
Hat or visor
Water bottle
💡 Tip for students:
If you go as a couple or with a friend, rent a double kayak (it's more stable and you can take turns paddling). You don't need experience, they'll explain the basics in 5 minutes.
Which of these adventures would you like to try?
Pucón is waiting for you with your heart racing. My recommendation: the activity that scares you the most is the one you have to do. Because after jumping, paddling or walking on an active volcano, you'll come down with a smile that no one can take away.
And if you need a comfortable, well-located place in Santiago to use as a base before and after your trip to Pucón, we can help. We offer equipped rooms especially for students like you, who want to travel, discover and live Chile to the fullest.
🌋 See you on the volcano summit!
